“Truth springs from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.” – Psalm 85:11
As we continue in our study of the Word of God, we are going to finish our look at the proofs of Biblical Authority. Last week we spent some time looking at the scientific proofs of the authority of the Word of God. In these proofs we showed how the Bible, when it speaks in the area of science is always authoritative. It never contradicts the scientific method. As we continue to explain the authority of God’s Word, we are going to take note of two other worldly proofs of the Bible’s authority and one spiritual proof of authority.
(I) Archeology: A second major proof for Biblical authority is the study of archeology. We remember that we are trying to support the fact that the Word of God is completely true and authoritative. One of the best ways to do that is to show how the Word of God is accurate when it lines up with the historical facts of the world. Archeology therefore is a major area in which the Bible is once again, proven to be a true, trustworthy, and authoritative document. One example would be the fact that our modern world denied the existence of the ancient people group, the Hittites. The Bible though refers to this people group some 40 times. While many believed this to be an error and fault of the Word, they were proved wrong by archeology. Archeology soon discovered the Hittite civilization recovering thousands of Hittite texts. This completely proved skeptics wrong and showed that the Word of God, when it speaks on matters of history (even specific people groups) is completely authoritative. In the end, Scripture will always end up being proven true, even if at first historians reject it.
Perhaps the greatest example of Biblical Authority in the area of archeology was the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in January 1947. Christian archaeologist Dr. Bryant Wood says this about their discovery, “Probably the Dead Sea Scrolls have had the greatest Biblical impact. They have provided Old Testament manuscripts approximately 1,000 years older than our previous oldest manuscript. The Dead Sea Scrolls have demonstrated that the Old Testament was accurately transmitted during this interval. In addition, they provide a wealth of information on the times leading up to, and during, the life of Christ.” The dead sea scrolls have a become a archeological statement on the veracity and authority of the Word of God. In these ancient manuscripts there is fragments from every book of the Bible (sans Esther) proving yet again the authority of the Word. There are countless archeological findings and proofs that coincide with the Word of God and show that when the Word speaks historically, it speaks authoritatively.
(II) Fulfilled Biblical Prophecy: The greatest and most magnificent worldly proof of Biblical Authority is the fact that the Bible, when it spoke of things concerning future events, was 100% accurate, even down to the very day. The probability that men could relay and describe events of the future in detail is incomprehensible, especially when you realize that the Bible predicted events long before they came to pass. 1 There are some 353 prophecies about the life of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament. Every single one of them comes to pass. Isaiah, a prophet of the Lord predicted the reign of Cyrus and his decree to release the Jewish people from captivity in Isaiah. Over 150 years before this King lived, Isaiah writes concerning him, “This is what the LORD says to His anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him…I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me.” (See: 45:1, 4; 41:2-25; 42:6). The fulfillment of this prophecy is later recorded in 1 Chronicles 36:22-23, ““Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and also put it in writing: ‘Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, “The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he has charged me to build him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all his people, may the LORD his God be with him. Let him go up.”
The fact that this prophesy and hundreds of others have come true, provides us with some of the clearest evidence and proof that the Word of God is completely authoritative no matter what area it speaks.
(III) Beyond Proofs: Beyond the outside or worldly proofs that we can offer to defend the authority of Scripture is the one proof that takes prominence over all. The greatest proof for the authority of the Scriptures is the proof of salvation itself (Rom. 10:9). Through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit (Tit. 3:5) and His indwelling of the believer (Jn. 14:16) comes the greatest assurance and proof of the absolute authority of the Word of God. This proof is based solely on faith (Heb. 11:1), belief in God (Mk. 9:24), and trust that He can and will save you from your sins (Matt. 1:21; Acts. 16:31).
Even though there are many proofs that come from outside faith in Christ, it is only a true saving faith in Christ that will lead us and guide us to come to believe that the Word of God is completely authoritative. Why? Because if one believes that the Word is authoritative, they will live in submission to its demands on their life. Only a person who is regenerated by the Holy Spirit will do this. Therefore through His saving work we can be certain that God’s word speaks with authority in every single area.
