Gentle Words.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1

The power of words can never be underestimated. Words have the ability to build up or destroy, to encourage or to beat down, to express love or express hatred. The Proverbs share much wisdom concerning the use of our tongues and how the words we speak can have a great affect on others. It is vital for us to guard our lips from speaking in a way that would destroy or injure others.

Gentle words, are words to be valued. They have the ability to calm down a heated discussion and bring understanding and peace to those involved. Gentle words are the words that the Lord would want His children to speak. Words that are gentle will be a blessing to others, they will lift others up. When conflict arises, are you a person who speaks gentle words? Do you take a second to think before you act in haste and speak your mind? The man who thinks before he speaks is a wise man, because he understands the power that his mouth holds. A harsh word on the other hand, only stirs the pot of anger that is already boiling. When the pot is stirred, hot water is going to boil over and someone is going to get burned. We must be people who refuse to speak harsh words to others, but rather ask the Lord to help us tame our tongues. May we make it a goal this week to be people who actively speak words of gentleness and grace.

  1. “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” Proverbs 29:11 Thank you for the encouragement to guard our words and the spirit in which we speak those words. Proverbs 31:26 has always been a dear verse to me as a young woman.
