“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?” – Psalm 42:1-2
Longing for God is something that all believers must be consumed by. As the psalmist pours out his heart before the Lord he expresses his extreme desire to be in the presence of God. He remembers how he used to lead the people of God in worship (Vs. 4), but now he is reviled by his adversaries (Vs. 10) and crushed by those who are his enemies. As the psalmist utters his cries of despair (Vs. 5, 11) he realizes that in such a time of trouble there is nothing he can do but run into the arms of his loving and gracious heavenly Father.
Dear Christian, where do you run when this world tries you, attacks you, and oppresses your spirit within you? I pray that you run into the arms of God. Although discouraged, the psalmist is not defeated. He is able to conclude this psalm by declaring with confidence, “Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God.” When we long for God and run to Him in our time of need we can be assured that we will find our hope in Him! What a joy it is to know that we can yet again praise Him for He alone is our help, He alone is our rock and our fortress! Rejoice today O Christian and know with certainty that when you long for God, and cry out to Him, He will be your hope, He will be your help, for He is your God.
