Sinners must Repent:
As we wrap up our discussion about the gospel of Christ we must know the way that a person can be saved. Now that the price has been paid by the shed blood of Christ on the cross (Eph. 2:13) there is a way for sinners to come to salvation. Jesus is the way (Jn. 14:6) and it is through repentance of sins, and a faith and trust in what He has done that guarantees our salvation!
For a person to be genuinely saved, they must obey the summons of God that calls them to repent of their sins and put their trust in Him (Matt. 3:2). This call is a call to the complete and radical transformation of the life of that person. Repentance is a turning from ones sinful, wicked, and fallen heart to righteousness. It is all done on the basis of faith and not shown by any outward deed or action (Tit. 3:5). Works cannot save us from our sins, rather we put complete faith in Christ the King when we repent. We trust that His righteousness will cover all our sins (1 Cor. 5:21).
The Lord longs for the wicked to repent of their sins, He cries out for it in Ezekiel 18:32 saying, “For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,” declares the LORD GOD. “Therefore, repent and live.” (See: Acts 3:19; 17:30; 26:20). For a person to repent they must turn their heart from sin to God (Is. 55:7).
In Acts 17 we have one of the clearest presentations of the gospel. It is the Apostle Paul who is the messenger and the people of Athens, the listeners. As he preaches the gospel to these men He declares, “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” Repentance is at the heart of the gospel call to mankind to repent is vital for true salvation.
When you turn to God, it will change your life. You now follow the Lord and His Word is your guide. You pattern your life after all that the Bible says. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Those who are the Lord’s are completely His and the spend the rest of their life serving Him. This repentance is evidence and partnered with trusting in the Lord as Saviour (Rom. 10:9) and living for Him forever.
As we have seen thus far, our Holy God (Is. 6:3), has had a magnificent plan of salvation from before the beginning of time (Acts. 2:23; Rev. 13:8). He knew that He must punish sin (Hab. 1:13) and because of His perfect righteousness, the Lord had prepared to sent His Son into the world (Jn. 3:16), bearing our sins, so that the world would be saved through Him (Jn. 3:17). Not all the world is saved, but only those who call upon the name of the Lord (Rom. 10:13) repenting of their sins (Acts 17:30),putting faith in what Christ has done (Eph.2:8-9) realizing that there are no good works that they can do (Rom. 3:9-18). The saved person is brought to this place through the work of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13) who transforms their life and seals them eternally in God (Eph. 1:13-14). The very righteousness of Christ is given to this them (2 Cor. 5:21) they have been justified (Rom. 3:23) and they now stand before God, holy and clean in His sight (Rom. 8:1). They are now (even though on earth) seated with Christ in the heavenly places (Eph. 2:6) and are promised to be with Him forever. They will be the saints who reign with Him, not only over this world (Rev. 5:9-10) but also over the world to come (Rev. 2:26-27) spending all eternity worshipping the King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Rev. 19:16). In the Father’s house they will dwell (Jn. 14:1-3) for they are forever with their Lord (1 Thess. 4:17). Eternity will be just that; eternal…for the Kingdom of God will have no end (Ps. 145:13). Completely redeemed, the saints will live in eternal bliss with the God of the universe and they will not cease to say, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.” (Is. 6:3). There dwelling place will be majestic : “There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him; they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads. And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.” (Rev. 22:5)
This is the gospel, this is the most important news you will ever hear. This is the call: God is holy, man is guilty, Christ is Saviour, and sinners must repent.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you all. Amen.” – Revelation 22:21
