The Gospel – Who is God?

I think, that the best place to start, when starting a blog intended to glorify Christ would be to start with: the Gospel. The Gospel is the heart and soul of the Christian faith. It is the message of hope for lost and thirsty souls. The gospel truly is the “Good news” that brings true meaning to life.

When we think of the Gospel and how we as human beings relate to God and His message, we need examine our own hearts. Culture has long wanted to know the reason for why we exist, and our world asks themselves questions such as, “Who am I?” “Why am I here?” and “Where am I going?” Although these questions may allow a person to think about their purpose for life, they will only get as far as their desires take them. God wants something different from mankind. He does not want mankind to merely know who they are, but more importantly, who He is.

The proper (Biblical) questions to ask oneself then are as follows: “Who is God?” “What is God like?” and “How am I supposed to respond toward Him?” These questions place the focus where it should be; on God and not on man.

In short, these questions lead to God and the only way to God is through Jesus Christ and His Gospel. The Gospel is the answer to these questions because the Gospel begins with God. And if we are to know God, and how to come into right standing before Him, we must know who He is.

Who is God?

God is the creator……

……of the entire universe. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” From verse one of the Scriptures, we have God. He does not need any introduction, he does not need to make an announcement. He is there, He always He as been there, and He always will be there (Ps. 90:2). As creator, God has made all things (Gen. 1-2) by the breath of his mouth and the dust of the earth He spoke the universe into being. Isaiah 40:26 reads,

“Lift up your eyes on high and see who has created these stars, the One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, not one of them is missing.”

Paul, in the book of Acts describes in detail who our great God is (See: Acts 17:23-25). He is the God who made the universe and who is in complete control over it. This is our God, He is our Creator.

God is the Owner……

……of all that is contained in the universe. Because God is creator, He is also the owner of all things in this world. Ownership, shows that God is in control of the world. He decides (and has decided) the course of history from the before time began (Is. 46:10). His purpose and plan on this earth will be fulfilled.

In the Psalms we read of the glorious ownership of God over all creation. David writes in Psalm 24:1, “The earth is the LORD’s, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it.” God owns everything in the universe, including mankind. We are not our own, whether we are saved or unsaved. We will all one day give an account to our Creator. For He even owns us.

God is the Sustainer……

……for He upholds the world. To truly know who God is, we must know that He is the sustainer of the entire universe. Not only has he created the world, and owns it all, but by His very control, He sustains it. Without God and his hand working in creation, the world would be unable to continue as it does. Speaking of Jesus Christ (who is God) the writer of Hebrews says:

“And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the Word of His power.”

God upholds the World, and this can only mean one thing: God is completely sovereign over everything. And this is the clear message of the Bible. Psalm 115:10 says, “Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.” See also (Eph. 1:11; Rom. 11:36; 1 Cor. 8:6).

So we ask ourselves, “Who is God?” God is the Creator, the Owner, and the Sustainer over everything. Moreover, He is sovereign over all things, no plan of His can or will be thwarted. This is a glimpse of our glorious God, and this is a glimpse of His glorious Gospel.

But there is so much more to know…….
